Local Traditions - Raw-Edible Wild Plants of the Mediterranean is all about discovering the amazing wild plants of the Mediterranean and learning how to find, harvest, preserve, and prepare them.

Objective

Local Traditions – Raw-Edible Wild Plants of the Mediterranean is a visually engaging, research-driven guide that brings together foraging, ethnobotany, local traditions, Mediterranean ecology, and contemporary editorial design.

Its goal is to document and celebrate the region’s raw-edible wild plants while making traditional foraging knowledge easy and accessible for modern readers. The design approach pairs classic botanical illustration with bold, contemporary typography, resulting in a clear, usable, and fresh aesthetic that keeps the book practical, approachable, and simply enjoyable to explore.

Process

Interviews > Research > Sketches & Prototypes > Design

To create this project, several interviews were conducted with the inhabitants of the village and planned excursions were taken to locations where the specific plants were prevalent. This research was conducted over the course of a full year to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the plant foods available at different seasons. The design aesthetic combines traditional illustrations of the plants with contemporary, lively typography to reflect the organic and ever-changing aspects of nature.

Outcomes

The project comes together through bold colors, oversized shapes, and a quirky typeface that gives the pages a lively, modern feel. Vintage botanical illustrations balance the louder elements, adding warmth and familiarity. The layouts stay simple and easy to read, with big headings and small notes that make the information approachable. Even as a small concept piece, the mix of colour, type, and illustration gives it a clear, fun personality—and a design character that feels current without being short-lived.
